SPAM SPAM SPAM!!!

I’ve been annoyed with spam lately (my blog and other lists) but I noticed my comments have had spam more and more lately, even with Akismet still installed. So, needless to say, I’m not happy about that. Since I just upgraded to MT 4 I figured I’d look at my spam and see how much better MT4 is with spam while also looking for comments that are legit but marked as spam.

Well, I went through about 3 pages (20 spam messages per page) and deleted then noticed the amount of spam MT was holding. 11, 627!!!! That’s ridiculous. Then I noticed some larger spam comment blocks (like huge blocks of text) so I started looking at timestamps.

I was getting spam almost every 2 to 3 minutes for weeks! With 11k in the entire spam block…I can handle 1 to 5 slipping through every now and then. lol. I still want it to be better though (no spam). None of these are hard to recognize as spam. I mean they say the same stuff as the rest of them: something about ringtones, nice guestbook, etc, etc.

So, a ton of comments were caught today but I don’t know if that is MT 4 or not. This simply means it is time to take some metrics. I’ve emptied my spam comments as of right now. I’ll blog again in a couple days and note how many made it through and how many were deleted.

More to come…

Up to MT4

I went ahead and installed Movable Type 4 and it was pretty painless. Copy/overwrite your current files and run the upgrade utility. I didn’t have to do anything else…NICE.

The admin looks really nice but I’m not seeing a bunch of jaw dropping updates. I mean the new text editor is nice but I’m using Windows Live Writer anyway (using the admin now though just to try it out).

Anyways…I’ll blog some more about it as I mess with it some more. If it has better spam support, I’ll definitely love it. :-)

Flash CS3 AirCompiler

Read more here.

Grant (Skinner) sent this to the list, over the weekend, and I had a chance to play with it. After setting it up (which he admittedly says isn’t the fastest; they’re working on it though) I was able to hit Test and have my CS3 app in an AIR window just that easy. Very nice!

Akismet+MT ROCKS!

Yes…I’m happy with spam catching and Moveable Type. 12 comments were caught as spam and THEY WERE SPAM. :-D That’s sweet. I think I’m going to open up comments to auto-post but I want to see how well it works for a week. We’ll see.

Happy for now,

JB II ;-)

Moveable Type 3.35 Installed + Akismet

I finally installed MT 3.35 to see if maybe there was better SPAM support (doesn’t look that way) but we will see. After installing it, I started going through the admin again and took a looksy in the plugins area. I saw the “plugin directory” link and checked it out. There were a few plugins I tried installing (I still hate the MT plugin install process but oh well) then I saw Akismet.

Akismet is now installed and hopefully working. We shall see in the next few days if it works. Feel free to post a “Test” comment below just to see if it is working right. I’d definitely like to run some tests but I guess the biggest thing is to just wait until spammers hit me again (which seem to be quite often).

Oh well…I’ll sit and wait for now. Hit me up with some posts (readers and spammers). :-D

FlashDevelop ROCKS!

I haven’t used FlashDevelop because I had it mixed up with PrimalScript (which has a price attached to it). One of our developers has used it for quite some time. Another one just recently picked it up for this huge Flash CS3 project we’re developing. Both spoke highly about the software but I still was skeptical. My main annoyance is using two programs to build an app. Meaning, Flash CS3 for the FLA and FlashDevelop open for AS files. Small issue but it kept me away.

Last night I decided to install the beta version and I toyed with it briefly. I really liked what I saw and today I actually dev’d in it. Now, I’m not going to go feature by feature and talk about what I like/dislike (haven’t met a dislike yet but I’m sure something will be disliked) rather I’m just going to say….FlashDevelop ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously. I’m redev’ing some classes and the mere fact I have code hints for the AS3 library (Flash CS3’s version) AND my custom classes is GREAT!

The bottom line is…the IDE sucks for AS3 development. I really tried pushing for some development updates in the IDE (before it came out, that is) but this IDE is horrible for development, in my opinion. Sorry Adobe…it just stinks (for development).

Ubuntu on Virtual PC 2007

I don’t know if it is Ubuntu or VPC but I am getting some weird results out of my tests.

 Ubuntu Graphics Problems

Mind you, I know nothing about Ubuntu or Linux in general. I’ve been interested for a while but never took the time to mess with it.

Anyway’s, it is late and Lil’ John has a Dr’s appointment in the AM. I need to get some rest.

Windows Live Writer Beta 2 - Testing

I saw Tim Heuer blogged about this so I figured I’d take a look. Blogging hasn’t been my #1 thing lately, although I have been wanting to…time hasn’t allowed [a lot to talk about though], and I am hoping having a desktop app will help improve that. I’ve heard a lot about this so I’m looking forward to seeing it in action.

Well…post 1 done with WLW Beta 2. I’ll do a full review later.

JSEclipse

I found this today on Adobe Labs. I’m installing it now so I’ll blog again when I get some experience with it. This may come in handy when building my Vista gadget.

“JSEclipse is a new plugin for the Eclipse environment that helps developers code JavaScript faster and with no errors. With JSEclipse, you can complete a variety of tasks, from editing small sections of code to working with the next big AJAX library or developing plug-ins for a product that embeds JavaScript snippets.”

Adobe Photoshop CS 3 Beta...PUBLIC

That’s right. Adobe has done the unthinkable. ;-) PS CS 3 is being released on labs tomorrow! SHAWWWEEEEEET! Tell everyone to go download it at noon tomorrow. That way there is bandwidth still available for me to download around 10. :-) Nah, they usually put things on labs in the middle of the night so it may be there late, late, late tonight.

“Packed with new features, Photoshop CS3 beta also includes a pre-release version of a major upgrade to Adobe Bridge, as well as a preview release of the all-new Adobe Device Central. Photoshop customers can use Adobe Device Central to design, preview, and test compelling mobile content, created specifically for smaller screens. This new tool, integrated in the Photoshop CS3 beta, simplifies and accelerates the creation of mobile content through a preview environment and built-in device profiles.”

Read more here and on 12/15/2006 (tomorrow) download it here.

AOL is Free & The APP IS TIGHT!

“Introducing AOL® OpenRide™, the newest AOL software. So much more than just a Web browser, its breakthrough four-pane design will revolutionize the way you use the Internet. No more jumping from one window to the next — everything you need is right there the moment you need it. And it’s absolutely free. Simply put: You’ve got to see it to believe it.”
- free.aol.com

Take a tour if you don’t want to install it. I just installed the app on Vista and it isn’t the smoothest start up but it is def’ an improvement on their old software. This is great work by AOL.

The slow startup was due to the browser loading. For whatever reason it opened two tabs (yes, tabbed browsing) automatically. My video card isn’t that great either so some of the transitions aren’t as smooth. I ordered a new video card yesterday so I’ll check it again in a couple days. :-)

Check it out though. This is a very nice app!

Expression Web Designer just works...

I honestly thought this session (“Expression Web Designer” by Wayne Smith) wouldn’t be anything of great interest (because I was looking for WPF info vs designer stuff) but it has turned out to be pretty interesting. Microsoft is getting this application right. I probably wouldn’t use it because I’m not a designer and don’t too much care for messing with CSS, etc but for those doing it…seriously take a look at it. Hopefully the video of this session (and the others) will be provided soon. The cameras are over my shoulder and have been recording all of the sessions.

Let me give a few of the niceties that have been shown.

Where is the UI heading? Desktop 2.0?

I didn’t realize until sitting in the NET User Group meeting that not everyone is used to having phat UI’s. Katapult focuses on UI’s, web or software, because 1) I am aethestically driven, to an extent, 2) because we can. Now, #2 may sound odd but I didn’t realize it until the meeting. Let’s dive in and see why.

IE 7 + Internationalized domain names

This opens up a whole new realm of domain names. I never thought using different characters in domain names would come so soon. A few weeks ago I was wondering how people who don’t speak english surf the web. What made me think about it was a site written and designed 100% for Arabic. I definitely didn’t know what it was saying but the domain name was in English. So, I took a deep moment to ponder “How do they know what address to type?” I assumed their keyboard or software did some translation or something.

Either way, the time has come in IE 7 to allow for international domain names.

“Domain names are not limited to ASCII any longer, and as the web is growing more and more domain names now contain characters from other character sets. Such domain names are called Internationalized domain names (IDN), for example http://ايكيا.com is a domain in Arabic for IKEA. IE7 added support for IDN in Beta 2. We listened to your feedback during Beta 2 and we are changing the principles of IDN to accommodate the way customers want to use international characters on the web.”

IEBlog: IE7 to be distributed via Automatic Updates!

“As we get close to the final availability of Internet Explorer 7, I want to provide an update on our distribution plans. To help our customers become more secure and up-to-date, we will distribute IE7 as a high-priority update via Automatic Updates (AU) shortly after the final version is released for Windows XP, planned for the fourth quarter of this year.”

What does this mean? Very shortly the install base for IE 7 will be GREAT! What’s the best part about it?

“If you decide to install IE7, it will preserve your current toolbars, home page, search settings, and favorites and installing will not change your choice of default browser. You will also be able to roll back to IE6 at any point by using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Finally, users who have AU turned off will not be notified.”

That’s awesome. Basically, you get the latest and greatest with no change to your current system settings. How great would it be to nix IE 6? Think about all of the CSS developers this would help. :-) Well, I know IE 7 rendering is the same as IE 6, unless in Strict mode, but at least things are on the way to being VASTLY improved.

Windows Vista: Automatic Defrag

“Years ago, I wrote a review comparing various disk defragmenters. To my surprise, the Disk Defragmenter in Windows performed as well, or even a bit better than, the retail defragmenters that were then available. (Further complicating matters, Disk Defragmenter was made by Executive Software, now called Diskeeper, which of course sells its own disk defragmenter product.)”

Pando = File Transfer Sweetness!

“Pando lets you send your home videos, giant presentations and entire folders of original quality photos to anyone with an email address. See how…

No adware, no spyware … no, really.”

They aren’t telling stories either! Cody and I tested today and I sent him a Pocket PC Chess game I downloaded a couple years back (no piracy issues here) and he sent me some .Net files. Everything worked 100% as expected with not 1 single glitch.

This is pretty sweet and I honestly believe this could replace IM file transfers. Forget about ease of use (click Transfer from IM window) and get on board with a single way to transfer files to anyone, regardless of IM client (and I say that with a bit of frustration at Trillian not always transferring files properly). Oh wait, they also have a Yahoo! IM plugin. Pando, get one for Trillian…fast! :-)

So, check it out and enjoy! Go here.

Vista Beta 2: Software Install Review

With any OS install comes installing software. With any beta software install comes issues. The logical conclusion is, with any beta OS install comes software install issues. Ok…maybe not exactly so but for the most part you have to agree. :-)

I am now on Vista Beta 2 (5384), which you can read more about those install woes in my Software archives, and I am pretty much done re-installing all of my software. I had some problems with a lot of software but for the most part 5384 had TONS more success than 5308 (the Feb CTP). While going through the process I thought about all of my readers and decided to go ahead and make notes about what I was installing and the success of each one. Let’s dive in and see what happened.

Windows Vista Beta 2 Install Experience...3.0

:-( Being that I’m on 3.0 you should know it didn’t work. I’m looking at an error right now. :-(

“Setup failed to open the Windows image file.”

Why? I would assume it copied it over to Windows.old since I had the ISO extracted to a folder on my desktop. I was so close. It even restarted Windows, booted to Windows Setup, and showed the setup screen with the normal poor graphics due to not all colors being used. :-( I just knew it was going to work.

Well, I guess I’ll move this to my new HD and try from there. Hopefully I get better results so my next post will say something to the effect “Vista Beta 2 is SWEET!” :-)

BTW, for those that think this post should’ve been a dot “release” like most have issues with .Net 3.0 (low blow…I konw; lol; it’s my blog though…nothing anyone can do about either, lol)…this was a marketing decision. ;-)

Flock is a free web browser that makes it easier than ever to share photos, stay up-to-date with news from your favorite sites, and search the Web. Take our tour to learn what’s different about Flock, then download the beta to get started - and please tell us what you think.

Flock — The web browser for you and your friends

Seriously…this browser is thoroughly sweet. All I can say is download it and install. It is based on the Firefox codebase, so I was told, but it is much more expressive. It has a built-in news (feed) reader, Flickr bar (you can drag photos to the bar and it willl post to Flickr), and you can even blog from it.

I went to the Flock hompage, right clicked, click Blog This, and a window opened. I am typing this blog entry within Flock and am not even having to touch Moveable Type (which is what this blog uses).

Wow…this is sweet! I think this may be my new browser.

Blogged with Flock

———————————Update———————————
Flock IS my new browser. I have officially switch on both computers.

Software Anti-Piracy Information

If you are a software developer/company it would benefit you to visit the BSA site. You can learn about piracy prevention, etc as well as potential ways to prevent piracy and handle product activation. Here is a blurb form the product activation section.

“BSA estimates that software publishers lose roughly $13 billion to software piracy every year. Many people are surprised to learn that the lion’s share of those losses come from the problem of over-installation - that is, loading a program onto more computers than authorized by the license agreement. Globally, that type of copying hurts software publishers more than retail piracy and counterfeiting.”

Check out the product activation best practices here.

Visual Studio Express Free for Life

I just read this on Tim Heur’s blog here. This is a pretty big move by Microsoft, in my opinion (as are all of my comments to follow). Microsoft has always been a money machine so releasing major products (SQL Server Express included) for free is big. Yes, they are “express” editions but still. When I decided to learn C# I had a free tool to download and work with. When I started reading up on Delphi…hrmmm…Borland wasn’t as nice which deterred my efforts. I won’t spend thousands on software just to learn a language. Notepad is out of the question unless it is do-or-die to learn it. Code completion saves tons of time debugging. ;-)

Bottom line…good stuff Microsoft!

Dreamweaver 8 JS Error fix for Windows Vista

The following Javascript error(s) occurred:
At line 56 of file "C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration\Shared\Common\Scripts\dwscriptsExtData.js": ReferenceError: dwscripts is not defined

Today I opened DW after a night of work and this error showed up. This was quite annoying. It seems this is a common problem, not limited to Vista, but everything I found about the error spoke towards pre-Vista folder structures. Here is a discussion regarding the possible fixes and here is the one I used. I’ll highlight the differences in the steps here.

Dreamweaver 8 & Flash 8 on Windows Vista

I had the darndest time getting these to install. Come to find out the old addage “Patience is a virtue” is true. Cody installed it fine on his system so I asked what he did which yielded no results because he installed it direct. :-( lol. He did inform me it took quite awhile to work though. I decided to just let it run for however long it needed.

Dreamweaver took about 30 minutes and Flash took about 40 minutes. The thing to note is it didn’t take this long to actually install but it took this long before the actual copying of files began. It just sits there with all buttons disabled for X minutes.

Patience is a virtue. :-)

Visual Studio '05 Install Issues on Vista

I couldn’t get this thing installed to save my life! I’ve wasted several days toying with it and for whatever reason I finally decided to start debugging the install today after knowing Cody got it installed with ease. Well, there are several reasons.

  1. He upgraded. I did a fresh install.
  2. I did a fresh install because I was on 2000. Vista currently only upgrades from XP.

The problem was my system registry still has a lot of old information. One piece of that information is that .Net Framework 2.0 was already installed. The VS installer detected this reg key and wouldn’t install the .Net Framework again so the Document Explorer 2005 (which is the new help system, etc for Microsoft apps) failed at login which prevented VS from installing. Here is the key I deleted…actually I deleted the whole folder.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v2.0.50727

I found this key information on Aaron Stebner’s blog post.
