Ok...LCDS Really Does Rock!

I’ve known about the sweetness of Flex Data Services LiveCycle Data Services since it was initially released but I finally installed it and played with the samples…YUMMY! :-) It truly is amazing to see my updates in Firefox update in IE the second (literally) I tab out of the datagrid.

Installation was a breeze, and what you expect. I’ve had some problems with WebORB lately (getting it setup) and have voiced the “non-plug-n-play’ability” of it on the mailing list. Mind you, I’m not knocking WO. It is an amazing product but in terms of install, setup, and running an app…I simply have not had a great experience installing it and running WO generated code. Anyways, this isn’t a post comparing WO and LCDS. :-)

To get back on track, install was merely running an installer and following the instructions it gave. The instructions were (in my words): go to the command prompt and start the jrun service. That’s it. LCDS was installed and working perfectly fine. I ran a sample and it simply worked. That’s what people need when they’re exploring new technology, IMO. 1) Ease of install. 2) Uptake speed (time it takes to start toying around). (just to name a couple)

If you haven’t tried it, you should. Don’t have Flex Builder? Who cares. Just install LCDS and run the samples! Also note, LCDS has an Express version which is free. Download it here and let me know what you think. Oh, don’t forget…this can all be built with Javascript too. :-D (see feature list here)

(Ajax Data Services) With this library, developers can integrate application clients built using Ajax technologies with the same back-end data services used by Flex application clients, including remoting, messaging, and data management.

Also, look into WebORB. It really is a great product and I’m not trying to knock it. We’re probably going to use it for one of our internal products. The dev’ team is really helpful as well (join their mailing list) and you’ll see what I mean. :-)

IIS 7 will be great!

I’m in a session with Bill Staples titled “IIS on PHP” and he showed how to setup PHP to work with IIS 7. He has documented it on his blog here. I’ll just tell you real quick what to do.

Go to Handler Mappings, add a script map to the php isapi dll (name may be different pending version of php), and click OK. Done.

Huh? What? Where? :-) That’s crazy huh?

Checkout Bill’s blog for the screenshots, etc. I’m sure you can do the same with CF. Once I get CF 8 installed (or grudgingly install 7 since 8 won’t install on Vista right now), I’ll try it out and see if it works. If you are on Vista and have CF installed, try it out and let me know how things work. :-)

IIS 7 will be great!

I am watching How Developers can Extend IIS 7 on Channel 9 and it is pretty interesting. IIS will definitely make ground in the market with IIS 7. It makes moves where IIS 6 didn’t and allows much more support for developers.

I’ll highlight a few of the areas that peaked my interest.

IIS 7.0 on Windows Vista

I had a HORRIBLE time getting Vista up and running. It wasn’t hard to install but getting software properly installed was a problem. My issue came from the fact I didn’t format my harddrive, for good reasons. Without a fresh HD I still had old registry information, files, etc. I fought with it for a bit then searched online and found David Wang’s blog, from Microsoft, where he had a post showcasing an install script for installing IIS 7.0 Beta. I tried it but it just kept failing. You’ll see some of my trials in the comments. :-)

Wildcard Cert Install

We had the hardest time installing our wildcard cert. Installing regular certs are easy but a wildcard cert posed a few issues. The process to install the cert for an IIS site is the same whether it is a wildcard or not. The difference is you must manually configure your server bindings. I know…how do you do this and what are they? Those were my first two questions. I know what a binding is but in reference to managing them….{insert scooby doo noise here}.
