Windows Vista Beta 2 Install Experience...2.0

Ok. It is getting…well…is late and I still don’t have Vista even close to beginning an install. Instead, I’ve even taken a few steps back after taking a leap forward. No need for dramatics…let me just explain the issue(s) at hand.

(for my 1.0 attempt go here)

I searched for more ISO apps that could hopefully extract the install.wim from the Vista ISO file. Guess what? I found one. I was soooooooooooo overjoyed when I saw a progress bar and even happier when I saw the wim actually extracted. SO…what next? RUN SETUP.EXE of course. :-)

By this time I have the Playstation rockin’ and I’m on Socom 3 at the same time. So, instead of turning my head like I didn’t care but really did (see 1.0 to understand), I actually paid no mind. I mean…I made it allllllll the way to the step where the wim file was needed and it failed, as expected. Now that I have the wim file it is install time, right? WRONG…WRONG…WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG! :-(

Open setup.exe and the setup window shows. Excellent. Step 1 down. ;-) Click “Install” and the “Please Wait” screen comes up. Excellent. Hrmmm…it is taking longer than before. WHAT? WHAT? ERROR? HOW COULD THIS BE? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo {insert echo down long dark hall}.

I could not believe my eyes. I didn’t even make it to the “get latest setup files from online” stage this time. OK. This must be a fluke. Try again. Same. Try again. Same. Try again. Same. Restart. Try again. Same!!!! :-( :-( :-( This just isn’t right.

Here’s the error I receive:
“Failed to initialize Windows Deployment Service Engine.”

What is that? I ask because Google doesn’t know either. LOL. I can’t find that ANYWHERE ONLINE! No site, including microsoft.com, has a reference to this name. I am totally spent now. I have no other options. Well, maybe I’ll try to “Run as Administrator” and hopefully that will work. Nope? Ok. Let’s “Run as Windows XP Service Pack 2” and what happens…NOPE? Hrmm…Google? Any idea? You neither? Man! What to do now?

Seriously, what to do now? I am trying one more time and out of the corner of my eye I saw the hour glass flip. I thought it was good to go but it just flipped. Wait….I’M AT THE “GET UPDATES” SCREEN!!!!! :-)

To be continued…
