Dreamweaver 8 JS Error fix for Windows Vista

The following Javascript error(s) occurred:
At line 56 of file "C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration\Shared\Common\Scripts\dwscriptsExtData.js": ReferenceError: dwscripts is not defined

Today I opened DW after a night of work and this error showed up. This was quite annoying. It seems this is a common problem, not limited to Vista, but everything I found about the error spoke towards pre-Vista folder structures. Here is a discussion regarding the possible fixes and here is the one I used. I’ll highlight the differences in the steps here.

Vista no longer has “Documents and Settings” but uses the folder “Users” instead. There isn’t a “Application Data” folder either. Now it is called AppData. You would think replacing those would due the trick but we’re not done yet.

Inside of AppData there are three folders, at least in my configuration: Local, LocalLow, and Roaming. I looked in Local intially because I don’t have much knowledge about the Roaming folder and didn’t think it had anything to do with where the Macromedia folder was located. Turns out…the Roaming folder is where you need to go. From here it is normal procedure. Go into Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/Configuration and delete the “WinFileCache*.dat” file and restart DW. All should be fine…was for me.

Here is the full directory structure, on my PC:
bc. C:\Users\John C. Bland II\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration

Hopefully this helps you.

You know that old saying, about how you wait an hour for a bus, then three come along at the same time? I'm getting that same feeling with builds of Windows Vista. I barely played with Beta 2 - fortunately. [Read More]
