XAML... Flash Killer?
(In response to Cody B.’s post)
Ok. Let’s separate the two really fast and end the debate. :-)
XAML more-so equivalent to Flex than Flash. Flash can do some great things but it isn’t even comparable to Flex and they are in the same product family @ Adobe. Some thought Flex would be a Flash killer but it isn’t. For 1, Flex is built on the Flash player. It doesn’t have a physical timeline for you to utilize but MovieClips are still around so you can do things like onEnterFrame, etc.
XAML definitely will never kill Flash simply because Flash is the most used software in history. Sounds odd? Yep, it is even higher than Windows. ;-) So for a subproduct of Windows to kill Flash it would mean, in my opinion, this product would have to 100% BLOW Flash out of the water so much so Flash developers, like myself, wouldn’t think twice about using it. For this to happen it would need a larger outreach than Vista and XP.
Now, the things shown in the video about what XAML can do is GREAT. This thing handles 3D videos in a super smooth way. I am definitely going to look into it since I’m learning C# and it integrates directly with .Net languages. Everything else shown in the video is easily done in Flex 2. Well, I’m not sure about the 3D ListBox they showed but I haven’t dug into Flex 2 like I should have.
So…Flash killer? No. Flex killer? NO. :-) Sweet app development tool? Absolutely.
XAML is to Flex as .Net is to ColdFusion. Both are great tools…it just boils down to which fits the job and project needs better.
