Flash Player 9 gets H.264+AAC

Nice! This definitely helps keep Flash as the de facto standard.

“Yes! that’s right Flash Player 9 will now supports H.264 for video playback. The latest update to Flash player 9 which will be available on Adobe Labs will include support for H.264 and AAC in the form or .flv, .mp4 and .mov files.”

Read more here: http://blogs.adobe.com/rgalvan/2007/08/flash_player_will_support_h264.html.

Update

Ryan posted a bit more on the topic and it clearly answers “Will Flash work with other video formats?” Yummmmmmy!!!!!!!

Update 2

Aral has the full FAQ here (found the link from Ryan’s post).

“In a nutshell, H.264 is the same standard being used to broadcast high-definition television by the likes of BBC HD, DirecTV, and Sky HD. H.264 provides great video quality and does so across the bandwidth spectrum from 3G (mobile phones) to HD while using up about half the bandwidth of MPEG-2. And there’s already a wealth of H.264 content out there that Flash can now play. Specifically, this includes MP4, M4V, M4A, MOV, Mp4v, 3gp, and 3g2 files. (And even songs from your iPod that are not protected by FairPlay DRM as they’re in H.264/AAC format too!)”

Uh oh Silverlight...here comes crappy sites!

Technorati Tags: ,

One of the biggest issues people complain about with Flash sites is the crappy graphics/implementation and stupid ads (even though they don’t blame Photoshop for animated GIFs; lol…had to say it…again). They blame this on Flash, unfortunately.

Well, I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. IT ISN’T THE TOOL MAKING THESE CRAPPY SITES AND STUPID ADS…IT’S THE PEOPLE!!!!

77% Optimus Prime

Keith Elder posted this earlier so I thought I’d take the quiz see which one I’d be.

And the results are:
I AM
77%
OPTIMUS PRIME
Take the Transformers Quiz

Optimus Prime
Optimus Prime is the heroic leader of the Autobots. He is the personification of courage, strength, and integrity. His personal motto is that “Freedom is the right of all sentient beings.”

Like Optimus Prime, you are good by nature. But beware because mischievous thoughts sometimes tempt you. You are inspiring, confident, and a natural leader. The Autobots have chosen well. In addition, you enjoy being one step ahead of your friends as far as trends and technology.

SPAM SPAM SPAM!!!

I’ve been annoyed with spam lately (my blog and other lists) but I noticed my comments have had spam more and more lately, even with Akismet still installed. So, needless to say, I’m not happy about that. Since I just upgraded to MT 4 I figured I’d look at my spam and see how much better MT4 is with spam while also looking for comments that are legit but marked as spam.

Well, I went through about 3 pages (20 spam messages per page) and deleted then noticed the amount of spam MT was holding. 11, 627!!!! That’s ridiculous. Then I noticed some larger spam comment blocks (like huge blocks of text) so I started looking at timestamps.

I was getting spam almost every 2 to 3 minutes for weeks! With 11k in the entire spam block…I can handle 1 to 5 slipping through every now and then. lol. I still want it to be better though (no spam). None of these are hard to recognize as spam. I mean they say the same stuff as the rest of them: something about ringtones, nice guestbook, etc, etc.

So, a ton of comments were caught today but I don’t know if that is MT 4 or not. This simply means it is time to take some metrics. I’ve emptied my spam comments as of right now. I’ll blog again in a couple days and note how many made it through and how many were deleted.

More to come…

Up to MT4

I went ahead and installed Movable Type 4 and it was pretty painless. Copy/overwrite your current files and run the upgrade utility. I didn’t have to do anything else…NICE.

The admin looks really nice but I’m not seeing a bunch of jaw dropping updates. I mean the new text editor is nice but I’m using Windows Live Writer anyway (using the admin now though just to try it out).

Anyways…I’ll blog some more about it as I mess with it some more. If it has better spam support, I’ll definitely love it. :-)

Kode2Go: ColdFusion 8 CFC's...Coming Soon!

We’re working on Kode2Go’s CF8 implementation. For those of you who don’t know, K2G is a code generator which saves us a ton of time for ColdFusion, Flex, and a little Flash code. It is 100% for database related apps but it does a great job.

Anyways, K2G is being updated right now to work with the upgrades of ColdFusion8. We will provide a list of the changes from ColdFusion 7 CFC’s and ColdFusion 8 CFC’s, based on K2G’s implementation.

MORE TO COME!!! :-D

Silverlight vs Flash: STOP IT!!!!

I’m 100% sick of these Silverlight vs Flash arguments. They are popping up all over the place and it is annoying. My problem is not people comparing the two to see which one they should use but when people are bickering about which one is better (like Flash vs Ajax).

As a perfect example, the AZGroups mailing list (.NET group) had a post about a “Color Picker Utility in Silverlight” in which Esther Schindler of CIO.com (blog: http://advice.cio.com/blog/esther-schindler) responded. To sum of my frustrations, I’ll merely copy/paste her email then my responses [since it covers all basis of this post]. This isn’t in any way an attempt to “out” Esther. It is just relevant that you see the posts as they occurred.

Adobe Ships ColdFusion 8

http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/pressroom/pressreleases/200707/073007ColdFusion.html

YUMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYYYYY! :-D

This is an incredible release by the CF8 team. I was curious as to what they would add to this version to improve a pretty solid CF7 but they definitely have impressed me. Great work CF Team!

Flash CS3 Web Services Classes...coming soon!

I don’t have them anywhere close to complete but I have figured out how to make the calls (less than an hour ago). For my immediate need I’ll probably hard-code a few things for this application but I’m going to full flesh out these classes within the next week or so. I’ll probably post it to riaforge.com but you’ll definitely hear about it here as well.

More coming soon…

Amazon Unbox Flex'ing

Yep, they have a simple Flex widget on the homepage now. How do I know it is Flex and not Flash? Well, I could be wrong but this error looks just like Flex errors (namely the LayoutManager line):

TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

Congrats on the upgrade Amazon! Despite the error, very simple and nice widget. It could be Flash CS3 but I doubt it. Either way…great work.

 Check it out here.
